What To Expect When You Meet With A Personal Injury Lawyer

If you’ve been injured due to someone’s negligence, you may be thinking of hiring a lawyer to represent you.  Friends, family or co-workers may be suggesting you “talk with a lawyer.”  If you are curious on what to expect when you meet with a personal injury lawyer, here are some things to keep in mind as you prepare for your meeting.
Once you sit down with the lawyer he will first want to get some basic background information from you.  He will then ask you which medical providers you saw for the accident, what treatment you received, and what type of injuries you sustained.  You can expect him to ask about your previous medical history, and whether or not you have suffered the same injuries you suffered in the accident, before the accident.
He will also want to know the particulars of how the accident occurred.  If you have photos of the scene, or of the motor vehicles involved, make sure to bring those with you.  As well, be sure to bring any insurance information you have about your own car insurance, and of the driver who hit you.
The attorney will, after speaking with you, be able to decide whether or not you have a case worth pursuing.  If he decides to accept your case, he will have you sign a contingency fee agreement.  If he declines your case, he will let you know why, and he may or may not refer you to a different attorney.
For workers’ compensation cases, the meeting with the lawyer will be basically the same as with a personal injury case.  For these cases though, he will focus more of his questions on the specifics of your job, your rate of pay, etc.
