Injuries reported in multi-car pileup on Rte 1 in N Saugus

SAUGUS, MA – A multi-vehicle collision along the highway in southern Essex County caused delays Tuesday afternoon, reports WCVB 5.

Emergency crews responded to the early rush-hour crash around 4 p.m. along Route 1, or Broadway, near Walnut Street in Saugus, which is about 12 miles northeast of Boston.

Authorities haven’t yet specified the cause of the accident, which they say involved a police cruiser and eight other vehicles. Three of the vehicles sustained substantial damage in the crash and were towed from the scene.

At least five people were hurt in the collision; it’s unclear if any of them required hospitalization.

Video footage taken at the scene suggests that the crash blocked at least one lane of Route 1 while crews worked at the scene.

A full investigation is underway.
