BOURNE, MA – One person sustained injuries last Friday in a fiery solo collision in northwest Barnstable County, reports Boston 25 News.
The accident occurred sometime before 7:20 p.m. on the exit ramp from Route 3, or the Sagamore Bridge, to Scenic Highway in the city of Bourne. This is just north of the Cape Cod Canal and about an hour southeast of Boston.
Authorities say that for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of their vehicle, crashed through the guardrail on the exit ramp, and left the roadway. Bystanders helped to remove the driver from the vehicle, which ignited after coming to rest.
Medics transported the driver to an area hospital with injuries of unknown severity.
Video footage taken at the scene indicates that a black SUV was likely involved.
Officials closed a portion of Route 3 in the area of the accident while emergency teams assisted the victim, put out the fire, and worked to clear the scene.
A full investigation is underway.
