Child killed in Memorial Day weekend crash in Franklin

FRANKLIN, MA – A wrong-way collision caused by a drunk driver in south-central Norfolk County killed a child and injured three others Saturday.

According to NBC 10 Boston, the two-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Grove Street and Beaver Street, which is just west of I-495 in the city of Franklin. This is about 42 miles southwest of Boston.

Police say that the driver of a pickup truck veered into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a car carrying a family of four. The impact of the crash ejected the mom and her 5-year-old daughter from the sedan.

The young girl succumbed to her injuries after transport to an area hospital via air ambulance.

Medics also transported the mom, dad, and brother to the hospital; the mom and brother were seriously hurt in the accident.

Authorities arrested the wrong-way driver, since identified as 21-year-old James N. Blanchard, on charges that include driving under the influence and motor vehicle homicide.

The investigation is ongoing.
