2 hurt, dog killed when sedans collide head on in Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY, MA – Two people sustained injuries, and a beloved dog died Tuesday in a wrong-way collision in northeast Middlesex County, reports WCVB 5.

Around 8 a.m., emergency teams responded to a two-vehicle crash on Whipple Road near Wells Drive in the city of Tewksbury, which is approximately 24 miles northwest of Boston.

Police say that the driver of a Mazda 3 entered the wrong side of Whipple Road and crashed head on into a Toyota Camry.

The driver of the Camry, identified as Wilmington Police Department employee Samantha Cavanaugh, went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The wrong-way driver also required hospitalization.

A dog in the Camry, known as Zena, sustained fatal injuries in the accident. Zena, officials say, served as a therapy dog for the Wilmington Police Department.

The driver of the Mazda may face charges in connection to the crash.

A full investigation is underway.
