1 killed, 1 arrested in Lowell Connector wrong-way crash

LOWELL, MA – One person died, and another sustained injuries Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash caused by a drunk driver in northeast Middlesex County.

According to WCVB 5, the accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. near Exit 5A on the Lowell Connector in Lowell, which is approximately 29 miles northwest of Boston.

Police say that 29-year-old Derek Witzenman was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Lowell Connector. Witzenman’s vehicle collided head on with another car carrying three people.

Medics airlifted all three people from the eastbound vehicle to an area hospital. The driver died not long after transport. Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim.

Officials arrested the Witzenman for negligence and for driving while intoxicated.

Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
