GLOUCESTER, MA – Emergency crews responded to a wrong-way collision with multiple injuries early Monday along the highway in Gloucester, reports Boston Herald.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on the Route 128 bridge over the Annisquam River. This is also known as the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge.
Police aren’t yet sure which vehicle entered the wrong side of the bridge. They say that the impact of the crash caused one of the vehicles to overturn, entrapping the two occupants.
Medics airlifted an 18-year-old from the flipped vehicle to an area hospital with critical injuries. A 19-year-old woman and an elderly man were also transported to area hospitals in critical condition.
A second 19-year-old woman received medical attention but has since been released. A second 18-year-old man went to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Motorists likely faced significant overnight delays along the Route 128 near the river while emergency officials attended to the victims and worked to clear the scene.
