Vehicle strikes, kills pedestrian on Merrimack St in NE Methuen

METHUEN, MA – A 23-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries Tuesday when a vehicle struck her in west-central Essex County, reports WCVB 5.

The accident happened shortly after 7 p.m. on Merrimack Street between Newbury Avenue and Albermarle Street in the city of Methuen. This is about 30 miles northwest of Boston.

It’s unclear if the victim was walking in or along the roadway, or if she was crossing in a designated crosswalk. Poor lighting and lack of visibility may have been factors in the crash.

The pedestrian, identified as Erika Newvill of Haverhill, died after transport to an area hospital.

The driver involved in the accident stopped to render aid and speak with authorities.

A full investigation is underway.
