COHASSET, MA – A 78-year-old man died Saturday when a commuter train struck his vehicle along the railway tracks in Cohasset, reports WCVB 5.

The accident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on the tracks between South Main Street and Heritage Lane at the Beechwood Street crossing. This is on the southeast side of the city, about 26 miles southeast of Boston.

Police say that a northbound MBTA commuter train was headed towards Boston when it hit a pickup truck. The driver of the truck had ignored the safety gate and lights at the railroad crossing when he drove onto the tracks and into the path of the train.

The sole occupant of the pickup truck, identified as John F. Canney, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

None of the train passengers were hurt in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
