Collision involving MBTA train and SUV in Abington kills 1

ABINGTON, MA – One person died Wednesday in a crash involving a commuter train and an SUV in north Plymouth County, reports NBC Boston 10.

The incident occurred around noon at the train crossing near Centre Avenue and Park Avenue in the city of Abington. This is about 21 miles southeast of Boston.

Police say the warning lights for the railroad were flashing when a white SUV entered the crossing. An MBTA train collided with the SUV, fatally injuring the driver.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased driver, nor have they commented on any other circumstances pertaining to the wreck.

No other injuries were cited in connection to the crash.

Officials closed Centre Avenue between Plymouth Street and Progress Street while crews gathered evidence and worked to clear the scene. Additionally, MBTA cancelled the 12:45 p.m. Kingston Line Train as a result of the accident.

A full investigation is underway.
