New Massachusetts Hands-Free Cell Phone Law Goes Into Effect
It is no secret that many car accidents are caused by distracted driving. These accidents cause personal injuries to innocent people. A primary reason for many distracted driving car accidents is cell phone use. A new law now has taken effect in Massachusetts that requires any cell phone use while driving to be done only with hands-free applications.
For now on, all drivers in Massachusetts are prohibited from holding a cell phone for the purpose of talking on the phone or texting while driving. The law prohibits drivers from looking at photos and videos on their phone while driving. This prohibition applies when a driver is stopped in traffic or at a red light or stop sign.
Drivers though are allowed to use a hands-free device for talking on the phone. However, drivers under 18 are prohibited from using their smart phone in any capacity while driving, including hands-free use.
Fines for those who break this law will be subjected to fines between $100-$500. This law is long, long overdue and will help to reduce the number of car accidents in Massachusetts. The people of the Commonwealth have just become safer on the roads so kudos to lawmakers for making this important law a reality.
