What To Do After A Bicycle Accident in Massachusetts
Bicycle ridership in Massachusetts seems to be at an all time high. Many people bicycle not only for fun and recreation, but also for commuting to and from work. Services such as Blue Bikes have wisely made bicycle sharing available locally in our area. With increased number of cyclists on the roads means of course there will be more bicycle accidents. These accidents can cause broken bones, head and brain injuries, and other very serious injuries. These accidents from being “doored,” from distracted driving, illegal left turns, improper lane changes and other possible negligent acts. If you get into a bicycle crash, here are some things to do.
1)  Make sure to obtain as much information on the vehicle that struck you. You want to not only get full contact information, but also the driver’s license and registration number.
2) Call the police. The responding officer will write a report which will contain everyone’s contact information that was involved in the accident (including witnesses). The police report will point out how the accident happened and who was responsible for causing the accident.
3) Be sure to obtain prompt medical attention. If you need one, don’t hesitate to take an ambulance if you are feeling any pain. Be sure to consult as well your primary care physician who will be able to refer you to a physical therapist, chiropractor, or orthopedic doctor, depending on how see your injuries are.
4) Be sure to not have any contact with any insurance adjusters that may contact you. The insurance company for the driver who hit you will be looking to get a recorded statement from you. Be sure not to do that, and be sure not to sign any paperwork. The last thing you want to do is sign any paperwork that will limit your rights to any compensation you may be owed.
5) Call a bicycle accident lawyer near you. These accidents can cause not only personal injuries, but also a great deal of stress and anxiety. Plus, you may be losing time from work. Be sure to at least receive a free consultation with an injury attorney so that you know exactly what you may be entitled to from an insurance company.
